Blackberry Phobia?

In view of the recent media attention given to Blackberry, some of you may have questions about the Blackberry devices that you are using.
  • Who is banning Blackberry services?
United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 11
Possibly India and Saudi Arabia

It is not sure the impact to others Blackberry services when you are in the aforementioned countries.
  • Why the ban?
  1. Security risk has been cited as the primary concern
  2. Blackberry service does not allow them to monitor data traffic sent and received by Blackberry users as it is encrypted.
  3. Some governments are concerned that it may be used for criminal purposes
  • What is Research In Motion (RIM) update on this issues?
  1. RIM is currently working with governments to meet their regulatory requirements
  2. RIM assures that it is still committed to deliver highly secure products that will satisfy the needs of both customers and governments
  3. RIM assures that the Blackberry security architecture will continue to provide customers with the ability to transmit information wirelessly, with the necessary confidence that no one, including RIM, could access the data
  • How secure is our Blackberry?
  1. The Blackberry security architecture for enterprise customers is based on a secure key system
  2. The customer creates their own key and only the customer possesses a copy of that encryption key
  3. RIM does not have a master key. It is purposefully designed to exclude the capability for anyone to read the encrypted information.
  4. All data remains encrypted through all point of transfer between customers’ server and devices.
  5. RIM assures customers that it will not compromise the integrity and security of Blackberry Enterprise Solution.
  • How will this impact me in Malaysia?
  1. As of August 08 2010, Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim has ruled out any move to ban Blackberry in Malaysia
  2. Datuk Seri however has requested that MCMC gathers more information on Blackberry services for his ministry to evaluate further on the cause of concerns.
